Every Bike I’ve Owned
I’ve had a lot of motorcycles. Each one marks a different season of my life - sometimes chosen to ride two-up with my kids, sometimes bikes for the kids to adventure together, sometimes bought to match
the place I was living. A few were answers to the whisper of corporate marketing, others the start of restoration projects I probably shouldn’t have taken on. But every bike, whether perfect or imperfect, carried a piece of goodness with it, and together they chart the road I’ve traveled.
In the Barn
-
2020 BMW R1250 GSA
Hands down the best machine I have owned. It’s easy to work on, confidence inspiring, excellent for 2-up riding, and fantastic range. Mosko Moto soft luggage rounds the bike out.
-
2024 CF Moto Papio CL 125
A superb going to town bike. Confidence inspiring for a young rider, and really fun to explore backroads on for adult riders. Combine that with easy to work on, and you have a fantastic cocktail!
-
2017 Yamaha XSR 900
The inline triple makes music. The ergonomics as good as a sport tourer. Planted and fun in the twisties! A special machine.
Twas But a Dream - Was Once in the Barn
-
2024 Royal Enfield Classic 350
Is it the best machine I have ever owned - yes. Do I deeply regret selling it - yes. Will I make that mistake again - likely. Pound for pound the most joy and smiles I will ever have.
-
2009 Suzuki Boulevard 1800 (M109R)
Just as quickly as it began, it ended. A whisper in the wind. Not my thing, nor my dads. Such a beauty. But she had to go. Fastest bike I have ever owned and sold - less than 7 days.
-
2001 BMW R1150 GS
A truly magnificent machine that I was able to bring back to life. I learned an enormous amount working on this motorcycle, and I am so glad it went to a good home.
-
2022 Yamaha XT 250
We’ve owned two of them. We’ve got a real love/hate relationship with this dual sport! My son & daughter dislike it very much for different reasons. I, on the other hand, would equip it with a suspension upgrade, new pegs, and handlebar risers and ride it around the world…they won.
-
2022 BMW R9T Scrambler
A magical machine. Drove it across the country, and within 2,000 miles had catastrophic engine failure (failed crankcase bearings). Engine was replaced under warranty, and it went back to its original home. A wonderful machine, beautiful vibes. Just wasn’t meeting my needs.
-
2006 Honda CRF450
Successful restoration project! This guy is a monster, but quickly went to a new home after the restoration was complete. I learned a lot about working on bikes doing this.
-
2021 Honda CRF300L Rally
Purchased this for my son. We took it on a few good adventures, but it was not his thing. We ended up selling it after we moved. You don’t see a lot of them around in Arizona without folks putting big money into the suspension.
-
2020 Suzuki VStrom 1050
This bike served me well for years and tens of thousands of miles. A wonderful, reliable machine. After a hard trip across Arizona, I sold it. The suspension was fatigued, and whereas they had significant suspension options for the VStrom 1000, everything had to be custom done for the 1050 - money I didn’t want to spend on a machine that was gaining miles. I don’t regret selling it - the R1250GS is in a different universe.
-
2005 KLR 650 (Gen 1)
This KLR was good to me - this is the first bike I tore down to the frame, rebuilt the engine on, and diagnosed a serious engine issue with. As of August 2025, this bike is finishing its restoration with the new owner, and will be back on the road soon!
-
2020 KTM 790 Adventure
This was a special machine until it had catastrophic clutch failure at just under 9,000 feet in the middle of nowhere. A real shame - she went to the dealership & never came back. But the bike gave me loads of smiles.
-
1969 Honda CT90
Failed restoration project. The engine was shot when I purchased it. I wasn’t feeling the restoration, and sold it in parts for what I had in it.
-
2021 DRZ-400
This bike saw some hard use and continues to with my good buddy who now owns it. An absolute monster, this thing has been all over the US in some tough places. Very difficult to enjoy out west for a weekend warrior.
-
2023 KTM 500 EXC-F
It’s still unclear to me why I sold this…mistakes were made. In retrospect, likely a good choice, but I miss it on a weekly basis.
-
2022 Royal Enfield Hunter 350
My sons first bike. It ended up going to his sister for a few minutes, but a bit too big to learn on at rider height/weight. A wonderful machine, reliable engine, and clean lines. A very nice bike.
-
2006 Suzuki VStrom 650
My first entry into adventure bikes. Put a lot of good miles on this machine, and she continued to see good use in the family until we sold it in 2024.
-
2006 Honda Shadow Aero
My first re-entry into motorcycling after the USMC. I cannot describe how much joy this bike brought me. It’s crazy to imagine a world in which I didn’t buy this at the time it was offered. No clue where I would be today.
-
1980 Honda XL500S
A failed restoration attempt on this motorcycle that had been run without oil. The crankshaft was heated so badly it warped, the engine case cracked, and the carb replaced with aftermarket. These bikes are highly tuned and require the carbs that come with them to function correctly. After seeing engine issues, I abandoned the project.
-
1983 Honda 650 Nighthawk
Clearly an AI generated image - I don’t have a picture of the machine sadly! But similar color and style. This motorcycle has great memories for me.
